South Carolina struggles to fund Civil War re-enactment
The 150th anniversary of the Civil War is almost here. South Carolina wants to commemorate the event by re-enacting the bombardment of Fort Sumter. The problem, though, is funding. Citing a difficult economy, South Carolina is scrambling to secure funds for the re-enactment. State historians want also to mark the 150th anniversary of the Ordinance of Succession, which is next year, and relate the experience of the freed slaves on the sea islands.
Seems it's easier to fund a war than commemorate one. Stay tuned for details as they emerge.

I would think that South Carolina would not be spending a penny on anything that had to do with celebrating the Civil War. It devastated the state, killed it's soldiers and citizens and caused suffering long after the war was over. Besides South Carolina has much more Revolutionary War history that is little known and needs research and preservation dollars. I'm afraid that all of it will have to wait due to the economic depression we are currently in.
If South Carolina does do a reenactment for the 150th, it should be done on a shoestring budget and I would also concentrate on the positive aspect of the war. The freed slaves.

Seriously, a modest ceremony seem much more in order given the state's budget crunch.
