About this Charleston topic
Beware flooding in Charleston, especially downtown, when the tide is high.
Charleston is part of the Lowcountry -- with such a name one expects much flooding. But downtown Charleston contends not only with its inherently low-lying nature but large areas also suffer from being landfill and even lower than many other areas of town.
This graphic does a good job of explaining the problems (PDF) and this Google map shows areas to avoid when the rain cometh. Also note that high tides can cause flooding; here's a table of high tide times. The City of Charleston’s hope to receive enough money through a federal stimulus fund to pay for a massive overhaul to downtown drainage system came up short this morning.
