Update July 23:
According to the Charleston Regional Business Journal, some members of Charleston City Council were “blindsided” by the request from sanitation workers to be recognized as a union.
If the workers want to unionize, the consensus is that organizers should talk to state lawmakers, not city council.
At this evening's Charleston City Council meeting, Charleston sanitation workers will demand to be recognized as a union and and are prepared to negotiate for better working conditions.
Workers want better safety equipment, better rain gear, masks, and hepatitis shots. There are also a flurry of other concerns that the city employees are ready to address.
