Extremely rare Freedman's badge unearthed at Lowcountry plantation

A City of Charleston Free Badge once worn by a free person of color was recently unearthed on the grounds of a Lowcountry Plantation

Found by a Columbia man with a passion for metal detecting at historic South Carolina Lowcountry plantations, the relic is worth between $20,000 to $30,000. Only 500 to 600 of the badges, issued by the government in the early 1800s, were ever made.

Live 5 News reports that the Freedman's badge bears the number 320, but city records cannot be found which would link the badge to a name.
