Bobcats, the Lowcountry, and our ecosystem
The Post and Courier's Bo Petersen caught up with Jim Chitwood who is helping track Kiawah Island's population of a few dozen bobcats and help the island establish a way to balance development of virgin land without squelching native species.
It's an interesting look at efforts to balance growth and environment, and it shows how attitudes and approaches have changed since a couple decades back.
Also, I'll point out a profile of bobcats from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources that discusses their population and notes that they can be legally hunted.
There are an estimated 1.4 to 1.6 million bobcats in the continental U.S.
