Charleston county schools prepare for security system upgrade targeting sex offenders
School systems here in the Lowcountry are slowly but surely beefing up their visitor security systems to quickly and properly identify sex-offenders wishing to visit on school grounds.
The Charleston County School Board has approved spending $147,420 to put the software in every district school by March of 2010.
What does the new system do? Within a minute, the system runs visitors' names through a national sex-offender database and alerts the school if it finds a match. If a match is detected, the computer scans his or her photo identification and prints their picture, school name, date and their destination on a sticker.
